Three-Handed Pinochle solves the obvious problem with the standard game: what to do when you’ve got 3 players instead of a clean 4. Rather than sitting someone out, this variant restructures the game so everyone plays individually.
What Changes From Standard Pinochle
- Players: 3, each playing for themselves — no partnerships
- Deal: Each player gets 15 cards from the 48-card deck (45 cards dealt, 3 left over)
- The widow: the 3 leftover cards. The winning bidder shows them, adds them to their hand, then buries any 3 cards face down. Buried cards can’t be melded, but any counters in them count toward the bidder’s trick points.
Standard partnership Pinochle has no widow. Auction Pinochle uses the same 15-card deal and 3-card widow, but only the bidder melds and each hand is settled on its own.

Bidding
Bidding follows the same structure as standard bidding rules — increasing bids until two players pass, leaving one bidder. The minimum bid is usually 250, raised in steps of 10.
Melding and Play
After picking up the widow, the bidder melds along with the other two players using the same combinations from Meld Scoring. Trick-play then follows the standard rules from Trick-Taking Rules — each of the 3 players plays individually, with the bidder trying to reach their bid alone rather than with a partner’s help.
Scoring
Because there’s no partner to combine points with, the bidder faces the full weight of their bid solo — making accurate bidding even more important than in partnership play. See Bidding Strategy and Scoring Explained for how the set penalty applies here.
The two opponents keep their meld only if they each capture at least one counter. The first player to 1,500 points wins.
When to Use This Variant
This is the right call whenever you’ve got exactly 3 players and don’t want anyone sitting out a hand. If a 4th player shows up mid-session, you can switch back to standard partnership rules for the next hand.
