Auction Pinochle is the classic three-player version of the game, built around a hidden widow that the winning bidder picks up before naming trump.
What Changes From Standard Pinochle
- Players and deal: 3 players, 15 cards each, with 3 cards set aside face down as the widow
- Only the bidder melds: the two opponents play together against the bidder but score no meld
- Burying: after taking the widow, the bidder discards 3 cards face down. Buried cards can’t be used in meld, but any counters in them count toward the bidder’s trick points
- Hand-by-hand settlement: each hand stands alone — the bidder either makes the bid or doesn’t

How Bidding Works
Bidding follows the same increasing-bid, last-one-standing structure from Pinochle Bidding Rules. The key difference is what’s at stake: the winning bidder doesn’t just name trump, they also get first look at cards nobody else has seen, which is a real informational edge worth factoring into how aggressively you bid. See Bidding Strategy for more on evaluating hand strength before the widow is even a factor.
Melding After the Widow
Once the bidder has taken the widow and buried 3 cards, they meld using the standard combinations from Meld Scoring — the opponents don’t meld at all. The widow can meaningfully boost the bidder’s meld — turning a marginal hand into a strong one, or completing a run they were missing a card for.
Trick-Play and Scoring
Once melding is done, trick-play and scoring follow the same rules as the standard game — see Trick-Taking Rules and Scoring Explained. The bidder wins the hand if meld plus trick points reach the bid, and loses it if not; traditionally, each hand is settled on its own rather than added to a running score.
Auction vs. Three-Handed Pinochle
Both use 3 players, 15 cards each and a 3-card widow. The difference is scoring: in Three-Handed Pinochle all three players meld and play to a target score, while in Auction Pinochle only the bidder melds and each hand is settled on its own.
