Single-Deck (2-Handed) Pinochle

Two-Handed Pinochle adapts the standard game for exactly two players, with no partnerships. It uses the same 48-card deck but changes dealing and adds a draw phase that doesn’t exist in the 4-player version.

What Changes From Standard Pinochle

  • Players: 2, head-to-head
  • Deal: 12 cards each; the next card is turned face up to set trump, and the other 23 cards form a face-down stock placed across it
  • Draw phase: after each trick, the winner draws the top card of the stock, then the loser draws the next

This stockpile mechanic is the biggest structural difference from standard partnership Pinochle, which has no drawing at all.

Every Meld Value at a Glance

Two-handed Pinochle uses the same meld table as the standard game. Print it with the free cheat sheet, alongside the trick rules and counters.

How Trump Is Chosen

Classic two-handed Pinochle has no bidding. Trump is set by the card turned up after the deal, and the player who melds the first dix (9 of trump) may exchange it for that face-up card.

Melding and Trick Points

Melding works differently from the four-player game. There’s no single meld phase: while cards remain in the stock, the winner of each trick may lay down a meld and score it immediately. Melded cards stay face-up on the table but still belong to your hand and can be played to later tricks. You don’t have to follow suit during this stage. Meld values match Pinochle Meld Scoring, and captured Aces, 10s and Kings count as in Trick-Taking Rules.

Once the Stockpile Runs Out

Once the stock is gone, melding stops and both players pick their melds back up. The last 12 tricks are played under strict rules: follow suit, beat the card led if you can, and trump if you can’t follow. This closing stretch is where remembering what’s already been played matters most.

Scoring

There’s no bid to make or miss. Each player adds their meld and trick points to a running total, and the first to 1,000 wins (some play to 1,200 or 1,500).
